Dr. Gáspár Bakos is a
Hungarian Heritage Award–winning astronomer and physicist,
Professor at the
Department of Astrophysical Sciences, Princeton University,
and Director of Graduate Studies.

Research Interests

His research interests include the
detection and characterization of exoplanets,
telescope instrumentation, assembly, and calibration,
the study of time variability of astronomical objects,
and large-scale sky surveys.

As the Principal Investigator of the HATNet exoplanet survey,
he has led the discovery of 38 extrasolar planets.
As the leader of the HATSouth project, he oversees
daily astronomical data collection using
24 telescopes distributed across
three continents:
Chile, Namibia, and Australia.

Education and Academic Career

Dr. Bakos earned his Master’s degrees in Astrophysics and Astronomy
at Eötvös Loránd University (Budapest).

He spent three years as a visiting researcher at the
Harvard–Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).
He obtained his PhD in Astrophysics
summa cum laude.

He continued his postdoctoral research at the CfA and later served
as a research scientist at the
Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.
In 2011, he was appointed
Professor at Princeton University.

Publications

He is the author of nearly 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications
published in leading international journals.
