Mathematical Chemist, Chair Professor
Department of Chemistry, Memorial University of Newfoundland

Dr. Pál Mezey is an internationally recognized expert in mathematical chemistry
and serves as Chair Professor at the Department of Chemistry,
Memorial University of Newfoundland. He was born in Oradea (Nagyvárad).

Education and Academic Career

He completed his higher education at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE),
earning an MSc degree in Chemistry in 1967, a PhD in Chemistry in 1970,
and an additional MSc degree in Mathematics in 1972.

Between 1982 and 2003, he was Professor of Chemistry and Mathematics at the
University of Saskatchewan in Canada. In 1985, he obtained
the DSc degree in Mathematical Chemistry at the same institution.

In 2003, he was appointed to the Memorial University of Newfoundland,
where he has continued his research and teaching activities ever since.

Canada Research Chair

In 2003, he was awarded the prestigious
Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Scientific Modeling and Simulation,
serving in a chair professor position. This appointment was renewed in 2010.

Research Areas and Scientific Contributions

His primary research objectives include the development of innovative methods
and software for modeling biomolecular structure and function,
molecular-level virtual reality simulations,
molecular informatics, and combinatorial quantum chemistry.

Dr. Mezey’s work in macromolecular computational quantum chemistry,
combined with high-performance computing–based modeling and simulation
techniques, has enabled the creation of a new
“computational window” through which the molecular world
becomes visible, accessible for study, and conceptually understandable.

Scientific Service and Editorial Activities

Dr. Mezey is the author of more than 340 scientific publications.
He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Mathematical Chemistry,
is a member of the editorial boards of six international scientific journals,
and editor of three scientific book series.

He is Secretary General of CODATA (UNESCO/ICSU),
a member of the Academia Scientiarum et Artium Europaea
(European Academy of Arts, Sciences and Humanities),
and an External Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
